Hope for Prisoner’s Mother with Leprosy

India hosts 66% of leprosy patients and has become the leprosy capital of the world, with at least 1,35,485 cases of leprosy were detected in India. A prisoner had approached us to help with the care of his mother, who was a leprosy patient and was shunned by the villagers. The mother suffered from nerve damage and muscle weakness. Even with this untreated scenario of loss of sensation and muscle paralysis, she cooked and fed the two little sons of the prison inmate. We located this disfigured elderly mother in pain and sensed the debilitating effect on her body and stigma surrounding her disease. Initially we helped and trained her to treat her wounds. We empowered the children to break the stigma and understand what their grandmother was going through. We  identified and paid a grocery shop closeby to provide the family with all monthly supplies. Understanding that the children cannot be managed by this affected old mother and her frail husband we suggested to put them in a boys dormitory. The boys were encouraged to acknowledge their problems and to take it up as their responsibility to overcome these setbacks and rise above them. The boys embraced the situation and began to work hard in their education and hence the intervention led to a lot of positive reaffirmations in this prisoner’s family.
