Women, be self-reliant: Let us support the handcraft makers

JK Foundation believes in providing alternative incomes for women in Tirunelveli’s rural and urban slum belts. Too much time at their disposal is ideal for the village women to set up rumor mills at any house they assemble at. We wanted to do something to support the marginalised sections of the society especially the women folk. For this we identified Thamiraiselvi, a village on the edges of Tirunelveli. The leader of the village’s self-help group was very vibrant and instantly encouraged us to engage the women of her village. Dr Jaya Ponraj  took up training on making small crafts with very easily accessible materials. The women were taught to make a range of handcrafts comprising nature-themed pots, baskets, hanging planters, hand towels, throws, aprons, cushion cover and more. The simple home accessories they made excited them as it helped to bring out their talent, exhibit their skills and enhance their employability. This support enabled them to secure a respectable position in their family and society.
